Favourite Reel?
#1
Just wondering what your favourite reel is and the best fish you have caught on it?

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

My favorite reel is a Shimano TLD Star 15/30. It's bulletproof at a 5-1 winding ratio and I caught a 150 pound mako shark, the reel loaded with #25 pound.

George Van Zant
http:// www.bigfishtackle.com/georgescorner.htm
Definitely the Shimano 200 Rear Drag Spirex. Personal best are 70# paddlefish on 8lb Stren and a 37# Grass carp on 8lb Stren. Both took an hour to land but were too much fun. I have a photo of the grass carp on the nebraskafishing.com website, although I will say it doesn't do the fish justice. It was nearly 4 foot long! The paddlefish, not counting the paddle was over five. With the paddle, over six.

keep those lines wet

Daniel C. Nielsen
http://www.nebraskafishing.com/index.html

Welcome George and that's a great catch on the TLD.

How long did it take to land that mako?

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

I don't know this model Daniel.

It sounds like a baitcaster all the same. If so, what't the difference between that and say a 200 Corsair?

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Thor

Just wondering if you would explain what bleu printing means for other anglers as some may not know and if they buy these reels then they might want to do the same.

If so, thanks. Sounds like some nice Yellow Tails on that set up as well. MJB

sorry for the delay. No the Spirex 200 rear drag is a spinning reel. Have to say that it is one of the finest I have ever owned, though definitely not the most expensive. I really like them for their dyna balance and double paddled handles. Very handy. Pretty unique looking reels with serious attitude. Built primarily for freshwater fishing and lighter lines, they are tough. Haven't had any problems with them yet...(knock on wood) and they have seen and dealt with some really nice fish the last two years for me, although probably nothing nearly as big as what you and the others guys get to fish for in the ocean!

later

keep those lines wet

Daniel C. No worries Dan and thanks for the heads up.

Did not know the model so that creates a really clear picture for me, and maybe others. I don't think we have then down this way.

If so, I have not seen them around. They sound like the are very well balanced and make for easy work. What line weight have you been using and what is the max they can carry?

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Well, the line weights I use are 6lb and 8lb test. I love Stren!!! the max the 200 Spirex carries is 10, but I think they may make a 300 or 400. If so, i am betting the 400 would probably carry 20 lb test pretty easily, although I have a hunch it wouldn't be enough yardage wise that you are used to. With 8lb Stren, I can get 120 yards on my 200. With 6lb, I can get 170.

I find with my Spirex, coupled with a Berkley Bionix IM6 rod thats 6'6 long, I can handle just about any freshwater fish I migh happen on. Although I wouldn't go so far as to say I could tackle a sturgeon, just because I know better. I would get thrashed pretty severely with my setup. All in all though, the spirex is extremely well balanced and remarkably tourble free. I own four of them and plan to purchase five more next year. (with tax returns..whoohoo!!)

I prefer the rear drags over the front drags, but the rear drags are a little heavier.

Still, all my really big fish have come off the rear drag and confidence is an important part in landing an outsized fish. Considering that carp i caught went nearly 5 times over the suggested limit (weight) of the line, I know I can land just about anything I set a hook into with it.

I might have to look into seeing just how big they make the Spirex models. I am going trophy catfish fishing this upcoming year. have my sights set on a fifty or better. Strictly catch, photgraph and release) and would love to have a bigger spirex backing me up against those brutes.

If I come across anything specific, I'll let you know, Might be something you would be interested in if you fish any inland waters at all.

keep those lines wet

Daniel C. Thanks Dan.

Would like to know if those Spirex come in bigger sizes and a link to a pic would be useful if you happen to find one.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Greetings Steve

here is a pic

<img src="http://www.shimanofishing.com/spinning/images/sr2000rd.jpg"

Seems like they only go up to the 4000 which supports up to 12lb test 160 yards. Would be interesting to see if they could build a bigger one for bigger game fish. They are really sweet and while I haven't tried any of the models that are more expensive than it, I haven't really found the need to yet. Although the Stella looks particularly promising.

The stella model

<IMG SRC="http://www.shimanofishing.com/spinning/images/stl2500f.jpg"

goes up to model number 16000 which has 13 yes 13 ball bearings and holds up to these quanities of line weight...12/660;16/440;20/350. Not to mention it also has teh addition of another Rear ball bearing as well.

About the only bad thing I can see is that it doesn't have the double paddle that I have come to really like. Now maybe if they start building a few like that, I would buy them...hmmm. might be something to talk to them about. Once you try a double handle spinning reel, everything else just feels different and out of whack. That extra handle is remarkable.

Let me know what you think.

keep those lines wet

Daniel C. Nielsen
http://www.nebraskafishing.com/index.html

Thanks for the pics Daniel

I kow that the bigger Stella's are used down this way for high speed surface work on big GT's and other species.

Poppers cranked in real fast etc and they seem to do the job really well when loaded up with braid.

Seem to have the grunt and drag to hold these big bruisers, although some are busting off which is not necessarily the fault of the reel.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com
