[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]The fishing this past week has been unseasonably slow, both in the harbor and on the outer-harbor ledges, due to the heat and soft tides. There are plenty of herring in the rivers just waiting to drop out into the harbors and bays. On Friday and Saturday mornings, the surface activity did pick-up in the inner-harbor bays. New bass, fresh from the sea and covered with sea-lice, found some of the aforementioned baitfish. [/size][/font]

[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Dave Gavitt made his second pilgrimage of the year east to Massachusetts from Troy, NY. In the spring, he and his friends fished Stellwagen Bank for cod. Friday’s trips targeted stripers on the long rod. From first light through the first few hours of the flooding tide Dave cast large herring patterns and chartreuse Half & Halfs to breaking bass feeding on small herring. Numerous bass between 24 and 27 inches were brought to net and released including three small keepers to 30 inches. White sliders and white gurglers worked well fished on the new floating Wonderline Advantage.[/size][/font]

[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Long time client Doug Bauer from Vernon, CT and his good friend Brian from Long Island had similar luck on Saturday. Each took a small keeper bass early while casting imitator patterns to breaking bass. After the surface activity quit, the fly fishers cast their offerings to flats, bars and rocks in the outer-harbor, which resulted a couple more keepers[/size][/font]

[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]With the moon tides next week and the bait staging for an exit from the harbor rivers, the table is set for the fishing to break wide open in Boston.[/size][/font]

Baitfish or the lack of it appears to the problem. However, on Saturday, good numbers of bass with a few blues mixed in were in the inner-harbor bays feeding on silversides. This produced some excellent early morning surface feeding activity.[/size][/font]

[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Dave and Greg, owners of the Bushman Outfitters of Northern Quebec and long-time associates at the regional sportsmen’s shows, traveled to fish Boston on Wednesday and Thursday. Finding the fishing relatively slow in Boston, we opted to fish the rocks and ledges in the outer-harbor and off Minot’s. On both days, casting chartreuse and white half & halfs on the fly rod and white slug-go’s on light-spinning gear was productive.[/size][/font]
[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Dave’s 32 inch keeper was his personal best bass and his first striper ever.[/size][/font]

[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Steve Crabtree and his friend Ned from Cos Cob, CT also fished the rocks on Friday catching good numbers of school bass to 27 inches. On Saturday, the second half of their two-day trip, the surface action was excellent on the early morning ebbing tide. White, Gartside’s gurglers in size 1/0 and 2/0 worked well, producing surface strikes using a staccato retrieve. School and small keeper bass to 29 inches, swirling on the silversides, inhaled the surface presentations fished on floating Wonderline Advantage.[/size][/font]
[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]The best producer on light-spinning gear was 3-inch rainbow trout color, Fin-S rubber- baits fished on ½ oz. jig heads.[/size][/font]
