#1
[#000000]Stripers Forever[/#000000][#000000] members – some very good news from the State of New York. [/#000000]
[#000000]S4948, the Senate version of the bill to prohibit commercial fishing for striped bass in the Hudson River was reviewed without opposition by the Environmental Conservation Committee. This bill, which has already passed the State Assembly, now goes to the Senate Codes Committee, chaired by Senator Eric Schneiderman. [/#000000]
[#000000]Here is what you can do to help keep this bill moving forward:[/#000000]
[#000000]If you are a NY State resident you should e-mail, or even better, phone, write and e-mail the office of your state senator today and tell him or her that you want their support for S4948, the bill to protect Hudson River striped bass from the pressures of commercial fishing. To find your senator, use this link: [/#000000]http://www.nysenate.gov/[#000000]. Y[/#000000][#000000]ou should also send a copy of your e-mail or letter to [/#000000]Senator Eric Schneiderman,[#000000] Chairman of the Codes Committee.[/#000000]
[#000000]If you are not a resident of NY, you should still e-mail or write Senator Schneiderman and thank him for his support of this legislation as a member of the Environmental Conservation Committee, and to urge him to use his best efforts to move the bill along to the full Senate. In either case, the other members of the Codes Committee find it helpful to receive your input when considering a bill before them. A list of committee members and their contact information can be found here.[/#000000][#1f497d] [/#1f497d]http://www.nysenate.gov/committee/codes
[#000000]Here is something you can use as a basis for your e-mail to Sen. Schneiderman: [/#000000]
[#000000]Dear Senator Schneiderman - I want to thank you for your support as a member of the Environmental Conservation Committee of S4948, the bill to prohibit commercial striped bass fishing in the Hudson River. In your role as Chairman of the Codes Committee, I hope you can move this legislation forward in a timely manner for consideration by the full Senate[/#000000][#000000]. [/#000000]
[#000000]Or to individual members of the Codes Committee:[/#000000]
[#000000]Dear Senator (name) - I want to ask for your support of S4948 , the bill to prohibit commercial striped bass fishing in the Hudson River. As a member of the Codes Committee, I hope you can move this legislation forward in a timely manner for consideration by the full Senate.[/#000000]
[#000000]· There has been no legal sale of a Hudson River striper for 35 years, and there is no reason to change this practice now.[/#000000]
[#000000]· Striped bass are already suffering from far too much fishing pressure. The quality of this fishery, which supports many guides and much tourism angling, is already declining.[/#000000]
[#000000]· Illegal fishing activity for striped bass – which are known to be heavily tainted with both mercury and PCBs – is already rampant in the NY City area. It is well known and documented. A legal commercial fishery, no matter how small, would only provide increased cover to launder these illegally caught fish[/#000000][#000000]. [/#000000]
[#000000]Sincerely, [/#000000]
[#000000]Your name and address[/#000000]
