Cairns, Great Barrier Reef Update
#1
Hi Guys,
This will be very brief - hell I'm off to get into some of the action!

The weather is absolutely brilliant - clear sunny skies, light breezes - it was 6 knots on the reef yesterday - starting to warm up a bit though and approaching the thirty degrees mark.
Conditions that our prime fish targets just LOVE.

Reef Fishing
Peter Todd of Aqua-Cat reports that the coral trout are on the chew. They are very active and in pre spawning mode so please observe bag and size limits. These fish are just the best on the table, no wonder they command such high prices at Asian restaurants. Small mouth nannygai and red emperor have dropped off though while we are having a late run of big spanish mackerel - fish to 37kg being landed.

The River
If you know where to find them the barras are on the chew - one guide landed 22 from a southern river last week, now that's great fishing, along with jacks, trevally, flathead, tarpon and fingermark. The Hinchinbrook region is still happening.

Blue Water
With FIVE black marlin over the magic 1,000 lb mark being tagged and released last week alone, two by our good mate on New Moon III, you could say things are red hot out wide. Shots of five / six big blacks a day are being reported. Action aplenty from the tunas, macks and wahoo also.

The Cape
How does 48 mangrove jacks in one day sound - if this appeals - now is the time! This report from Weipa.

That's it - I'm off to Trinity Inlet to catch a feed of barra before the closed season starts in a few weeks time.

Catch you on the water
Regards, Les.
http://www.fishingcairns.com.au

Complete anglers guide to Australia's Great Barrier Reef and remote Cape York.
G'day Les

How goes it in Cairns? Pretty hot judging by the report below.

You many want to provide more details on tackle being used, where, and on what otherwise species Capt.Dan may ask for this report to go back to the Aussie Board.

Not sure if he's around at the moment so I will put you in the picture for now.

For example, do you know what they got those 48 jacks on or the big spaniards? What are barramundi taking at the moment and when does the season close?

For those non - Aussie anglers, Jacks or Mangrove Jack are directly related to Cubera Snapper. Neil (from the West Indies) can tell about these XOS bruisers and I am sure our Panamanian connection likewise.

Use the link below to find out about both of them. The Cubera get huge, and I mean huge, with teeth like a rabbid dog and put our jacks to shame even though are considered one of the toughest tropical fighting fish (pound for pound).

http://www.kenschultz.com/

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the advice, this report was really a very quick piece put together as I was about to leave the house and go fishing with the kids.
The Jacks were all taken on lures, and the gold bomber long A is the one. The spaniard are taking ganged pillies as well as trolled lures meant for tuna etc.
Lure fishing is not a case of stating a particular lure - it all depends on where your fishing, the water clarity, the depth, the prevailing weather etc - something that is just too large a subject to cover in a brief report.
Yeah, the jacks are big at 50cm in our neck of the woods because at that size they migrate out to the Great Barrier Reef. From here they grow to 30 + lb, and then you have one real mean mother to contend with I can assure you.
Thanks again, regards Les.

Complete anglers guide to Australia's Great Barrier Reef and remote Cape York.
No worries Les.

Just thought I would make the suggestion for next time around given that I know many anglers have an interest in oz fishing and how we tend to fish somewhat different down this way as well.

Those jacks sound great and especially when they get out onto the reef and bulk up.

All being well, I am looking to take a group of anglers up to Weipa in April and fish the area again. The last time was spectacular so your report had me drooling at the mouth as well.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com
