State fisheries crews will be working nights starting Oct. 1 to gather brown trout population estimates on the Missouri River.
Twice a year - spring and fall - members of the fisheries division of Fish, Wildlife and Parks electro-fish three sections of the Missouri: downstream of Holter Dam and near the towns of Craig and Cascade.
In the spring the work focuses on the river's brown trout population, because many rainbow trout are in tributaries spawning. Come fall, brown trout spawn and it's time to count the rainbows.
This year's fall survey work will cover several time periods: Oct. 2 and Oct. 22 from Holter Dam to Wolf Creek Bridge; Oct. 1-2 and Oct 15-16 from Wolf Creek Bridge to Craig; and Oct. 6-7 and Oct. 20-21 near Pelican Point just upstream from Cascade.
The work takes place at night to better capture fish and to avoid disturbing anglers. As many as two boats will work the river at the same time; both are equipped with lights and generators.
