Waterbury, VT - The Fish and Wildlife Department hosted its annual 2010 Let's Go Fishing Instructor Training on Saturday, March 13th at the Education Center at the Edward F. Kehoe Conservation Camp in Castleton, VT.
A total of 23 participants attended the training as part of the process to become Vermont Certified Let's Go Fishing (LGF) Instructors. The training day focused on learning program operating procedures and policies, program implementation and hands-on teaching strategies. A typical Let's Go Fishing clinic covers four themes: fishing skills; tackle craft; ecology and management; and ethics (responsible behavior).
Vermont Game Warden Jeff Whipple, Fish and Wildlife Specialist Joel Flewelling, Hunter Education Specialist Ann Shangraw, and Kehoe Facilities Coordinator Jason Morin assisted LGF coordinators Trish Pelkey and Jan McCoy with the workshop. In addition, Certified Instructor Karl Hubbard from Shelburne gave a demonstration on a pond ecosystem and how you can use this activity in a LGF clinic.
One of the new highlights of the program for participants was the plastic "Backyard Bass." The instructors use these fish models to teach fishing skills as well as Vermont fishing regulations.
