Finally got me one
#1
Howdy guys, after reading the tips you gave me I decided to go give it a shot. I put a chicken liver on the hook and cast out and literally a min later this bad boy grabbed it.

Thanks guys for the the encourgement to go catch em. Just one question tho where do I grab him to take the hook out? Do I grab him like a bass (In the lip)? or do I grab him between the tail and the dorsal and dorsal the pectoral fins?

I grab them by the stomach and put my thumb under the spine on one side and the first and second finger have the spine between them. Here is a picture of my son holding one by this grip.

Also, It sounds bad...but many do it Including me. If you are going to keep the fish use pliers and cut the spikes off. They are really bad on young ones, but tend to be wore down on the older ones. The above is a good way to grab or you can get a grapper for body or lip....both work good.

Good Luck,

Shawn M

Here are some I use:

That is exactly how I grab them.

but having a towl handy while cat fishing is a must.. and dont drop the cats on the bottom of the boat, they are extra slippery and leave extra slip on the bottom of the boat if you do then you need to take extra care in standing up in the boat.

that is the right eatin size...

If you try that liver in michigan, since we are low on the cat department you may finding you self fighting a giant turtle.. [cool]

another good way to hold them is with a finger up the gill plate and a thumb down through the mouth and keep them clamped together. All the flipping he does, if you hold tight, he shouldn't wrestle free.

A big channel cat will make you wish you never put a thumb in his mouth. Ron

Eee My apologize ron, I accidentally reported ya. Anyway, HE IS INNOCENT. What I was trying to do was reply, and I thought it made me confirm that I wanted to reply. Anyway. What I wanted to say was, I wholeheartedly agree with ron. haha. Do not insert thumb in a cats mouth

I didn't say to put a thumb in every cats mouth. But on the smaller ones, I've always been able too. It's a personal decision.

Same for Chicagoland. Caught a snapper on stinkbait once fishing the Fox River. Don't hold those by the lip.
I also caught a softshell turtle fishing with worms for small cats on the Whapsy in Iowa. I also got a bullsnake in a crick near Rockford. Never caught a fish as pretty as yours though- nice job!
