Birthday Fishing Recommendations
#1
My boyfriend, who is an avid fisherman, is having a birthday soon. It just so happens that I will be in Denver for work the second week of May. I would love to plan a fishing getaway for him. We will have a rental car and can drive 3 hours or so from Denver. He loves any kind of fishing, so I am open to ideas. We will not have boat with us, but could rent. Ideally would love to go somewhere that we can fish for a while, maybe get some hiking in, have a good meal and ideally hit up a brewery and see some live music at night. Anywhere come to mind? I'm open to any suggestions. You guys are the experts so I'm looking forward to your recommendations! Thanks

hiya ddeforge.. welcome to this forum and the site.. while I am sure you will get some replies here but you may also want to ask the same question on the Colorado forum.. folks from the local area may have a more insight especially to local waters and dining etc..

May means runoff. The rivers will be raging. The more laid back fishing areas will be the tailwaters; ie, the few miles below reservoirs where the flows are more controlled. Or fishing the lakes and reservoirs.

For a romantic tris. Go stay at Bear Creek Cabins in Evergreen. The lodge is 1940's style log cabins right on the creeks edge. No TV but has a kitchenette and the slight smell of wood smoke... from the wood fire place. The creek is right out the front door. This is below a reservoir and will probably not be raging. The cabins have a feeling of seclusion and relaxation even though it is right on the edge of town. Then go to the Little Bear for supper and live music. You have to get there early. Out of town entertainers sometimes stay at the Bear Creek Lodge. One time when I was staying at the cabins Leon Redbone was staying there and watched me fish.

Many of the fishing lakes do not have boats to rent. You have to go there with your own boat or a guide with his boat.

Could go hike in Rocky Mountain National Park and then fish below the reservoir in Estes Park or fish some of the lower altitude lakes that have iced off.

I can tell you a few fly shops to check with if you identify what part of the Denver area you will be staying in. If you get serious about Hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. I can come up with a couple of Fly shops in Estes Park.

If you go hiking around the Bailey Conifer area. Then go find the Bucksnort Saloon for a unique funky Colorado Experience, food, and maybe some live local music. http://www.thebucksnortsaloon.com/
