DiGuilian Named TBF Conservation Ambassador
#1
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - He's one of South Florida's most recognized fishing teachers and captains, maintaining a long and active history in nearly every aspect of sportfishing and fisheries conservation today. In recognition of Captain Anthony (Tony) DiGiulian's ability and dedication, The Billfish Foundation recently honored him as a TBF Conservation AmbasSador.

"It's an honor to acknowledge Tony for his work," said Ms. Ellen Peel, president of TBF. "I'm also proud to announce he will now be working with The Billfish Foundation in an official capacity."

Involvement in sportfishing began at an early age

Growing up around the docks of Long Island, New York, Tony first found his calling in sportfishing working as a mate on his aunt and uncle's charter boat. He continued his commitment upon high school graduation working as a professional mate and eventually a captain throughout the 1980s and '90s.

Since becoming a captain, Tony has led anglers to over 5,000 billfish captures across the globe.

For the past decade, the multi-dimensional DiGiulian has also operated Saltwater Professional Consulting a private sportfishing consulting firm in Ft. Lauderdale, teaching thousands of anglers in a wide range of courses. Within this capacity, Tony has continued to travel the world, spreading the message and practice of marine conservation.

"He was instrumental in the founding of the Jeddah Sportfishing Club, in Jeddah Saudi Arabia, and in 2009 he captained anglers to the first swordfish captured on rod and reel in the history of the Red Sea," said TBF's Elliott Stark.

"For years Tony has been a member and ardent supporter of The Billfish Foundation, and has displayed his passion and professionalism from his many speeches at boat shows and tournaments, to articles authored in fishing magazines and electronic media."

"Tony has worked closely for TBF for several years," added Peter Chaibongsai TBF's Director of Science and Policy, "including hosting circle hook rigging workshops, speaking at TBF engagements, and aiding TBF's international tagging program for the safe release of billfish. If you see Tony on the tournament trail, feel free to stop and talk some fishing. He truly is an ambasSador of conservation."

The Billfish Foundation is the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to conserving and enhancing billfish populations worldwide. With world headquarters in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., TBF's comprehensive network of members and supporters includes anglers, captains, mates, tournament directors, clubs, sport fishing and tourism businesses. By coordinating efforts and speaking with one voice, the organization works for solutions that are good for billfish, not punitive to recreational anglers and good for the local economy. The TBF web site is billfish.org.
