Mosquito Lagoon Report
#1
Capt. Rob Blake’s fishing report from Florida’s Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River-updated October 26, 2001.

Here comes a big cold front!

Fall’s first legitimate cold front is scheduled to sweep through the area this weekend, causing a decline in water temps and sending more of the Mosquito Lagoon redfish to the white sand spots for comfort as the day wears on. With the cold front comes wind…and a lot of it. Forecasts for Saturday call for 20mph winds out of the NNE. Find a leeward shoreline and pick away at the white spots!

Over the past week, I may have seen the sun once or twice. Fishing days have been covered with low clouds and rain…sometimes torrential rain. Nevertheless, the reds have cooperated somewhat by giving anglers shots early on. Sightfishing has been difficult when the fish aren’t tailing.

On Monday, clouds…and more clouds… but somehow we avoided the rain which seemed to be all around us. Mike Gillespie from Annapolis, MD and his brother Jeff from Atlanta, GA got numerous shots at tailing fish, schooled up fish, and a few lazy ones that came within inches of the boat as they meandered through the grass. Between the two, they got 4 reds to the boat in a half-day trip. But more than that, they went away with their first Mosquito Lagoon experience.

Thursday, Mike Carlson of Melbourne and his buddy George also got shots at tailing fish. The clouds were still there, but no rain. Mike has fished with me several times prior and has seen his share of tough conditions. Even though visibility was tough, they managed 5 slot reds in a half-day trip.

Water levels in Mosquito Lagoon are still a tad high, but clarity is still pretty good. Cooler temperatures are coming, and with some hot fishing.

Capt. Rob Blake
www.redfishonfly.com
321-633-0923 or
321-544-5041

Contact Capt.
