Sarasota Area Backcountry Report
#1
Capt. Kevin Chamberlain

Water temperatures climbed back into the lower 80's before last Thursday's front passed over us, and area action was decent. Trips in Sarasota, Charlotte Harbor and Lower Tampa Bay produced nice redfish, snook, trout, jacks and ladyfish. Lower water temperatures are what we're looking for and this last front will probably provide just that.

In Sarasota, we managed redfish to 5 1/2 pounds, trout to 1 1/2, jacks to 2 and several ladyfish on MirroLure Top Dogs, Yo-Zuri's new Banana Boat top water lures and Oh Son's plastic shrimp. In Charlotte Harbor, redfish to 7 pounds, snook to 4-1/2 and jacks to 3 pounds took Clouser minnows and weedless gold spoons in Bull Bay, Turtle Bay and Gasparilla Sound.

On Friday, strong post cold front winds out of the North-Northeast put the hammer to us. We fished Terra Ceia and the wind had blown most of the water out of the bay, making it impossible to access the flats. Working the deeper grass, nearly 6 hours of casting various Clouser Deep Minnows, resulted in less than a dozen ladyfish. Tough day. Lookin' forward to a good bite when the winds lay down.

Just a reminder, trout season closes on November 1st and will reopen on January 1, 2002.

Thanks,
Capt.
