How do you avoid snags?

I've always been told to never let the prospect of a snag interfere with casting for the best spot. I've caught a few nice cats in one spot, but I've lost about 10 hooks there, too. I'm not talking about simple knots being undone. I'm talking about line-snapping. Any rigs that are good at avoiding thus?

Most of the time I fish those spots from above them in a float tube or pontoon. Ron

This has me thinking- is it really that important to sink bait to the bottom? If the river is only 4 to 10 feet, wouldn't a bobber suffice? I'm pretty sure catfish will smell the bait regardless of whether it's 2 feet down or on the bottom. Also, how do you use a cork as a bobber?

A lot of times I use a slip bobber when I am drifting a river for cats. The slip bobber allows me to adjust the depth I see on my sonar. If the water is warm and the fish are very active I don't always drag bottom. Ron
