#1
Ohio's newest state park and wildlife area officially open on August 27

COLUMBUS, OH - A dedication ceremony celebrating the grand opening of Wingfoot Lake State Park and Wildlife Area near Akron is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 26, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The ceremony is open to the public, and many recreational activities will be offered that evening.

Officials from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, the former owners of Wingfoot Lake Park, along with The Trust for Public Land, which partnered with ODNR to purchase the property, will join local elected office holders and ODNR officials to mark the occasion.

The gates will open at 4 p.m. Before and after the ceremony, invited guests and park visitors are welcome to sample the park offerings including miniature golf, disc golf and court games. Special activities scheduled at the adjacent wildlife area after the dedication ceremony include archery and guided wetland hikes.

Beginning Friday, August 27, Wingfoot Lake will be open daily. Periodic archery programs, controlled waterfowl hunting and trapping will be offered this fall at the wildlife area. Fishing with a valid Ohio fishing license will be permitted. In addition to mini golf and disc golf, recreational facilities at the state park include paved walking paths, playgrounds, baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, bocce ball and badminton courts and horseshoes. Boat rentals will be available, and six large shelterhouses will be available by reservation. There are no overnight facilities or camping available.

"With the kids heading back to school, a trip to Wingfoot Lake is a great end of summer outing for northeast Ohio families," said ODNR Director Sean Logan. "The dedication ceremony will offer a chance for the curious to get a preview of this wonderful new state and community asset."

Reservations for the shelterhouses can be made up to one year in advance by calling 866-OHIOPARKS (866-644-6727) or on-line at www.ohiostateparks.org.
