Zebra Mussels On the Agenda in Omaha
#1
LINCOLN, Neb. - A public meeting to discuss the presence of destructive zebra mussels in Zorinsky Lake will take place December 7 in Omaha. The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Montclair Community Center, 2304 S. 135th Ave.

Zebra mussels, an aquatic nuisance species, were found last month at the 255-acre lake in southwest Omaha. The non-native zebra mussel threatens ecosystems by competing for food with native fish and causes economic harm by damaging boats and water system pipes.

The zebra mussel is a small mollusk, usually less than 1 inch long. One mussel can produce up to 5 million eggs per year. Young mussels suspend in the water and eventually attach themselves to substrate. Mussels can spread by attaching themselves to a boat. When that boat is launched at another body of water, the mussels can release their eggs.

One option to combat the zebra mussel may be to draw down Zorinsky Lake to allow winter temperatures to freeze and kill the invader.
