CONCORD, N.H. -- Get primed for the fall hunting seasons at a series of evening talks by area hunting experts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings from August 31-September 28, 2010, at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive, in Concord, N.H. Admission is free. No pre-registration is required. Come early for good seats and bring your questions! Here's the line-up:
AUGUST 31: RESIDENT CANADA GOOSE TACTICS -- Few things can compare to a flock of geese coming into your decoy setup, says Ray Jackson, an avid waterfowl hunter who explores early season goose hunting tactics in the first talk of the series. Jackson explains how to set up your decoy, shot size, choke selection, use of blinds and the importance of "pre-scouting." You'll hear about basic gear needs, safety and field care, plus his favorite ways to prepare goose. Jackson is the Northeast Pro-staff director for Buck Gardner Calls and is on the Pro-staff for Mossy Oak Camouflage and Tanglefree decoys, blinds and accessories. He spends more than 60 days a year hunting ducks and geese. During the off season, he carves decoys, fishes and presents waterfowl seminars throughout New England.
SEPTEMBER 7: CALLING ALL WHITETAILS -- Increase your odds of success hunting deer this fall! Dean Vanier of NorthWoods Common Scents has more than 35 years experience pursuing whitetails in the New England woodlands. His talk explains the whitetail's superior defense mechanisms and how to use this knowledge to your advantage. Vanier's surefire strategy is that by fooling the whitetail's ears, eyes and nose, you can and will bring deer to you. Get scouting tips and learn what to look for in the deer woods and how to apply that information during various phases of the rut. You'll learn typical calling and scent hunting tips and get an introduction to advanced calling and scent hunting techniques. This talk will give you a whole new perspective on hunting whitetails!
SEPTEMBER 14: UPLAND BIRD HUNTING PRIMER -- The outlook for hunting New Hampshire's premiere game bird, the ruffed grouse, is excellent this year. Experts and locals agree, there is a ton of grouse (partridge) out there. That said, this clever bird can be a bit of a mystery. Join registered N.H. Hunting Guide and dog trainer Garrett Booth of Grey's Outfitting for an inside look into grouse hunting. Garrett will cover how to find covers that hold birds, dog training and handling tips, guidance on shooting and shot size selection, plus gear, trip planning, dog care and field care of these wonderful game birds.
SEPTEMBER 21: FALL TURKEY HUNTING TACTICS -- New Hampshire has a long fall archery season for turkeys, and this year the 5-day fall shotgun season for turkey has been expanded to include most of the southern part of the state. This talk brings together Bill Devon of Quaker Boy Calls and David Smith, a registered N.H. Hunting Guide, to share the insights of their combined 50+ years of hunting these crafty birds. Devon presents turkey hunting seminars at sportsmen's shows and clubs. He is on the Quaker Boy Game Calls Pro-Staff and is President of the N.H. State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Smith has a wealth of experience with the "second season" for turkeys. He will share his tried-and-true tactics for hunting fall turkey and demonstrate various fall turkey calls. This talk will give you a valuable edge if you decide to tackle the tough, but rewarding, pursuit of New Hampshire's fall turkeys.
SEPTEMBER 28: PRODUCTIVE SCOUTING AND HUNTING STRATEGIES FOR WHITETAILS -- Whitetail deer hunting in New Hampshire can be challenging. At this talk, you'll pick up some key knowledge of deer biology that can help you understand deer sign and come up with a deer hunting plan that increases your odds of harvesting a whitetail this fall. Presenter Dave Priebe is a seasoned outdoorsman, lifelong naturalist and a volunteer New Hampshire hunter education instructor; he's also a Quaker Boy Game Calls Pro-Staff member. Priebe's talk will cover the rut (the phases of male whitetail deer breeding behavior); scouting (the real hunt!) and identification of classes of deer in your area; hunting techniques and strategy during each rut phase; areas of greatest deer activity; and the effects of food, water, weather and humans on deer behavior.
