Buoy 10 fishing now underway

Fishing at Oregon's famed Buoy 10 is now underway following an upbeat pre-season forecast of nearly a million chinook and coho salmon expected to enter the Columbia.

Halibut season opens this week

The summer halibut season from Cape Falcon to Ledbetter Point, Wash., will open three days a week, Friday-Sunday, from Aug. 6 through Sept. 26 or until the harvest quota is achieved. The all-depth halibut season south of Cape Falcon also opens on a Friday-Saturday schedule.

Chinook Salmon

Big run of fall chinook expected on the Columbia

Fall chinook salmon season opened Aug. 1 on the Columbia River, and anglers can look forward to a large return of these prized fish. Fishery managers are forecasting a return of 655,000 chinook this fall, which would make it the largest return since 2004.

Archers: Start scouting now

Now is the time for archers to begin their annual pre-scouting trips to the woods. Aug. 30 is not far away, hunters should be spending this next month locating the elk and deer herds. Many of the animals found now will be in that general location come opening season. High elevations are the place to look-besides, it's a great time to be in the woods to avoid the heat. Use optics from a distance to view feeding areas in the early mornings and late evenings. Disturbing the animals may cause them to change their feeding locations.

Road closure on Phillip W. Schneider Wildlife Area (Grant County)

Flat Creek Road will be closed weekdays beginning Aug. 2 through Sept. 30. The road will remain open for public use on the weekends, from 6 p.m. Friday evenings to 6 a.m. Monday mornings. More information
