Nebraska Panfish Limits Change Soon
#1
LINCOLN, Neb. - The daily bag limit on panfish will change effective January 1, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Several fishing regulations changes, most of them designed to simplify rules, go into effect at the start of the new year. The regulations will be valid through the end of 2012.

The major changes starting in 2011 are:

Panfish - The statewide daily bag limit will be 15 and the possession limit 30, eliminating the daily bag limit of 10 and possession limit of 20. The eight-inch minimum length limit on sunfish is eliminated on Olive Creek Lake, Czechland Lake, Wildwood Lake, Walnut Creek Recreation Area Lake, and Yankee Hill Lake. The 10-inch minimum length limit on crappie is eliminated on Walnut Creek Recreation Area Lake, Wehrspann Lake and Zorinsky Lake.

Trout - The statewide daily bag limit is five, with no more than one fish longer than 16 inches, and the possession limit is 10. The trout regulations on the Two Rivers State Recreation Area (SRA) put-and-take trout have not changed.

Black bass - In order to reduce confusion, black bass length limits are now either 15-inch minimum or 21-inch minimum, eliminating the no-harvest regulation on some waters. The 21-inch minimum length limit serves the same purpose as the no-harvest regulation.

Channel catfish - The statewide daily bag limit is five and the possession limit 10, eliminating the daily bag limit of three on some waters.

Flathead catfish - In the current daily bag limit of five, only one of those may be 30 inches or longer. Also, no harvest of any catfish will be allowed on Two Rivers SRA Nos. 3 and 4, Fort Kearny SRA No. 2, Windmill SRA No. 3, and Wildwood Lake, to eliminate identification issues.

Blue catfish - No harvest of any catfish will be allowed on Two Rivers SRA Nos. 3 and 4, Fort Kearny SRA No. 2, Windmill SRA No. 3, and Wildwood Lake, to eliminate identification issues.

Bowfishing - The harvest of nongame fish, from inland waters and the Missouri River, is allowed 24 hours per day, year-round.

Box Butte Reservoir - Underwater spearfishing for game fish is allowed to start on June 1, rather than July 1, only at this area.

Lake McConaughy - From sunset to sunrise, April 1 through April 30, fishing from a boat within 30 yards of the dam will be allowed only on that portion of the dam 200 feet north of the outlet, with travel only in a counterclockwise direction.

No harvest lakes - No fish may be harvested on Kea West Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Lake, East Hershey WMA Lake and West Brady WMA Lake.

High Use Fishing Areas - This designation has been eliminated and those areas now are regulated with a 21-inch minimum length limit on black bass and the statewide regulations on panfish and channel catfish.

Bait regulations - Plains and Northern leopard frogs no longer may be commercially harvested or sold for bait. However, anglers still may collect them as bait for personal use.
