Ohio DNR Announces Local Marine Patrol Grant Awards for 2011
#1
COLUMBUS, OH - Grants administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft have been awarded to 28 local marine patrol units in a continued effort to keep Ohio waterways safe and enhance recreational boating experiences for Ohio's estimated 3 million boaters.

The 2011 Marine Patrol Assistance Grants will help local law enforcement agencies provide emergency response to boating-related incidents, conduct routine waterway patrols and purchase safety equipment for use on marine patrol vessels. Funding of the grant program comes from the state's Waterways Safety Fund, which largely is comprised of watercraft registration and titling fees, funding from the U.S. Coast Guard and a share of the state motor fuel tax.

A total of $573,832 in funding grants are being awarded this year, an increase from the $557,003 that was awarded in 2010. Three of the marine patrol units are located along the Ohio River (Hamilton, Lawrence, and Scioto counties) and 11 marine patrol units are located along Lake Erie, including law enforcement agencies in Toledo, Port Clinton, Put-in-Bay, Huron, Vermilion, Lorain and Rocky River. The remaining marine patrol units receiving funding assistance from the Division of Watercraft are located elsewhere across the state including law enforcement agencies in the greater Akron, Dayton and Columbus metropolitan areas.

A listing of the Marine Patrol Assistance grant recipients can be found online at www.ohiodnr.com/watercraft.
