A lot is going to depend on what the water temp is at the time you are hitting the lake. Early spring, I will go shallow and look for rocks, gravel, sandy areas. Shallow with nearby deeper water.

These fish will spawn around 40 degrees, so it is still pretty cold. Prior to the spawn, they will feed in the shallows as it warms up the soonest and has the bait fish in there.

If you mean spring as in May, when the water temps are up, you will find them near humps and breaks, but they will change up with the weather.

Last May, I was catching them in 2 feet of water when the lake was in flood stage. When the lake settled down a bit, I was catching them in 9-15 feet.

Around here, May and June are the best months for inland lake fishing. They are really feeding heavy then.
