CASEVILLE, Mich. - Two brothers hailing from the "thumb" of Michigan are expanding the family-run business that provides on-the-water assistance to Lake Huron boaters and anglers. Capt. Jeff Moore and his brother Capt. Jimmy Moore have purchased TowBoatUS Sand Point (based in Caseville, MI) from former owner Capt. Gary Poirier. Joining the brothers is Jimmy's wife, Capt. Sara Moore. All three are USCG-licensed.
The Moore brothers, second-generation mariners, grew up on the water and spent time helping their father in the salvage and maritime services business. Jimmy and Sara are also former Merchant Mariners and Jeff has years of experience operating side-scan sonar as well as diving and documenting Lake Huron shipwrecks. In the off-season, Jeff is an independent systems consultant while Jimmy sells and installs docks and hoists and runs the welding and metal fabrication services for the family's other local business, Bay Marine Salvage.
Much like an auto club for boaters, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) offers an "Unlimited" on-the-water towing service plan that gives Great Lakes boaters and anglers a reliable way to get home when their boats break down on the water, run out of gas, or run aground. The cost is just $58 a year, which includes BoatUS or BoatUS Angler membership. Without a towing plan, boaters face costs that nationally average about $600 per incident, paid out of pocket.
Recreational boaters, sailors and anglers can call the on-the-water towing company 24-hours a day at 989-553-4445, through the BoatUS toll-free Dispatch Service at 800-391-4869, or by hailing on VHF radio channel 16. Most of the reasons for calling are for mechanical breakdowns, but unfamiliarity with the sand bars near Caseville and Port Austin's rocky shoals also sometimes lead to grounding mishaps by transient boaters.
TowBoatUS Port Austin's 22-foot Boston Whaler response vessel is fully rigged for marine towing and salvage work and ready to go at a moment's notice, including extra fuel, engine fluids, pumps, and battery "jump packs" to handle dead batteries. TowBoatUS Sand Point, located at Riverside Marina in Caseville, has a 26-foot Stanley. Both vessels can be identified by their distinctive red hulls, white bow stripes and "TowBoatUS" lettering along their sides. Each offers extensive salvage and pollution containment capabilities and all of the company's hired Captains are HAZWOPER and Red Cross CPR/First Aid certified.
Both TowBoatUS locations are part of the country's largest boat towing program, BoatUS Towing Services, with over 600 towboats servicing hundreds of ports and waterways coast to coast.
