DOW OUTDOOR ADVENTURE WEEKEND AT TWO BUTTES
#1
LAMAR, Colo. - The Colorado Division of Wildlife will offer a free weekend of outdoor adventure and skills classes June 10-12 at Two Buttes State Wildlife Area.

The weekend is geared toward youth and families who want to learn more about the outdoors. The event begins with skills classes at noon on Friday and runs through 5 p.m. Sunday.

"This weekend gives families a chance to spend time outdoors and learn hands-on experience from trained personnel," said District Wildlife Manager Todd Marriott. "Folks can enjoy fun and learning in an outdoor setting, and also have the option to earn their Hunter Education card."

Youth must be at least nine years old to have the opportunity to earn a hunter safety card.

"Even if you already have your hunter safety card, this will be a great weekend to spend quality time outdoors with your family," Marriott said. Participants can practice marksmanship, archery, map and compass reading, outdoor safety and other outdoor skills through interactive programs facilitated by Division of Wildlife staff.

The following is a list of just a few of the classes that will be offered: eastern plains deer hunting strategies, outdoor survival, muzzleloader basics, upland game birds 101, elk hunting strategies, bow hunting, modern firearms, waterfowl hunting basics, shotgun basics, ethical hunting and wildlife management.

Skills classes will take place during the day. Evenings will offer fishing, campfires or optional sessions. Everything takes place outdoors, so participants must be prepared for any kind of weather.

"Spending an entire weekend outdoors provides an opportunity to teach a hunter education course more in-depth than normal," said Marriott.

There is no cost to attend.

Families will be allowed to tent camp. Youth staying overnight must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Meals will be provided, but campers must bring their own camping equipment -- no trailers or RV's allowed.

The Outdoor Adventure Weekend takes place at the Two Buttes State Wildlife Area about forty miles southeast of Lamar. Two Buttes is about 4-1/2 hour drive from Denver.

The Division of Wildlife will provide all the equipment and meals. Several local sponsors and clubs are supporting this event with food, supplies and volunteers. Guns and ammo will be provided -- please do not bring your own.

Participants must pre-register and space is limited. For more information, or to register, contact Marriott at 719-340-0279.
