FAMILY FISHING CLINIC JUNE 4 AT QUAIL LAKE
#1
COLORADO SPRINGS - The Colorado Division of Wildlife will host a family fishing clinic from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., June 4, at Quail Lake.

Free fishing rods and reels will be given away to the first 500 children accompanied by an adult.

"Wildlife officers will be on hand to teach fishing basics, casting techniques, knot tying, fish identification, and fishing ethics," said Steve Lucero, an education specialist with the DOW. "Fishing is a fun activity that gives families a chance to get outdoors."

Quail Lake is a popular place to fish in Colorado Springs. The Division will provide the poles, the bait and instruction. "All you have to do is reel them in," said Lucero. Parking is available at the ATMEL lot across the street from the lake.

"You don't even need a license because the first weekend in June is Free Fishing Weekend in Colorado," said Lucero. "The requirement to buy a fishing license is waved June 4-5, but all other fishing rules and regulations still apply including where you can keep fish and how many you can keep."

Children under the age of 16 are never required to buy a fishing license in Colorado, but during the rest of the year adults need one.

"There are a lot of great fishing opportunities in the greater Pike's Peak Region," said Doug Krieger, Senior Aquatic Biologist for southeast Colorado. "Around Colorado Springs, Prospect Lake and Rampart Reservoir have plenty of catchable rainbow trout."

Nichols Reservoir, just below Rampart, is another great place to take kids to catch trout, Krieger suggested. He also recommends the reservoirs on the north slope of Pikes Peak. Crystal Creek, North Catamount and South Catamount reservoirs all provide good opportunities for trout fishing.

"In Pueblo, a kid can ride a bike along the Arkansas River and fish in Runyon, Fountain and Anticline Lakes as well as the river and have great fishing," he said. The river itself offers great trout fishing thanks to plenty of trout stocked by the Division.
