RANGERS SEARCHING FOR MISSING BOATER

LAS VEGAS - National Park Service rangers are searching for a missing boater described as a Hispanic male, mid to late thirties from Las Vegas. He has been missing since about 8 p.m. and was last seen in the water without a life jacket just outside Callville Bay. He and two other men were boating just outside Callville Bay. Two were in the boat and one was being towed on an inflatable raft. The man on the raft decided to come in so they stopped the boat. One of the men on the boat jumped in the water to pull the inflatable in. He needed assiatance pulling in the inflatable so the boat driver, who is the missing man, jumped in to assist. They then realized the boat and raft had drifted away. The man who was on the inflatable was the only one with a life jacket. He took it off to share, however now the boat driver has drifed away from the pair. They report last hearing and seeing him around 8 p.m. The National Park Service received the first report of three men missing at around 7:30 p.m. Rangers responded with two boats and located the reporting party's location around 8:30 p.m. and began their search. Two of the men were rescued by a passing boat and brought in to Callville Bay. They were not injured. As of 10:15 p.m. the search and rescue operation is on going.

MISSING LAKE MEAD BOATER PRESUMED DROWNED, IDENTIFIED

LAS VEGAS - The National Park Service has concluded its search and rescue efforts for the missing boater on Lake Mead and will transition to a search and recovery operation tomorrow. The missing man who is now presumed drowned is identified as Ruben Aguirre-Martinez, 38, of Las Vegas. Today park rangers assisted by Nevada Department of Wildlife game wardens continued the search for Aguirre-Martinez. The search resumed at 6 a.m. and continued until 4 p.m. when it was suspended for the day. Tomorrow park rangers will continue to search the area for the man's body. After tomorrow, the search will be scaled down to searches during normal patrols of the area."Given the witness reports, how long he has been missing, the water
temperature, and weather conditions we believe that the probability of finding Aguirre-Martinez alive is very unlikely," said Andrew Muñoz Lake Mead National Recreation Area spokesman. Next of kin has been notified.

Callville bay is not really that big. I wonder what happened. He must have got a cramp or got run over or something. Once your inside of the bay, the waves generally push you towards a shoreline. Sounds easy to say, hey I would just swim to shore; but many things could have happened. Terrible.

Panic is what happened. All it takes is a few gulps of water and you’re gonzo. It’s Sad to know that this incident could have easily been prevented if they slowed down and thought about what was going on. Why they all abandoned ship without anchoring? We will never know. Here are some snippets from a news story last year.

“Lake Mead spokesman Andrew Munoz said that as water consumes a person, the drowner is not splashing and screaming, but typically appears to be quietly and calmly slipping away. About 15 people drown at Lake Mead every summer. Park officials said life jackets could have prevented most of those deaths. This summer, rangers will be handing out 1,000 jackets to help people stay safe”

The reason why I always wear my PFD on the kayak.

I've heard of kayakers having a heart attack or falling in the water wiithout a PFD and drown. Also the windy conditions of the lake can push your kayak too fast to swim after it.

Its not that uncomfortable to wear.

I always wear a pfd on my tube for reasons like this. Too many unpredictable conditions no matter what type of boat you're in, especially on Mead with all the morons on speedboats and jetskis.
