can U id fishes schooling

went scubadiving @ 20feet today near the beaches of Falmouth Heights, Cape Cod
we were told there was nothing to see, well we have encountered over 30 fishes schooling in coordinated manner about 18 inches, entirely silver with gray vertical stripes and they all had one brown diagonal stripe just above the eyes, they were currious and kept coming back and forth watching us diving.

with out seeing the fish, it would be hard for me to say, but I would guess it might be makerl.

used in canning and making patties, also as bait fish.
