Renegade Rumble on Utah Lake
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Been wanting to hit Lincoln Beach to check out conditions. Did it today, in spite of the moon and all the other excuses. Probably shoulda stood in bed. No skunk but tough fishing.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Started off with a chilly 36 degree breeze blowing on my cold fingers while I tried to get set up. Didn't help much. Got better when the sun peeked over the mountains. Water temp was down to 54. Too cold for prime cattin' but I was gonna focus on toothy critters today (walleyes).[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Cranked up the electric motor and went directly to the springs along the north part of Lincoln Point. Worked shallow and deep. Used plastics and cranks...and a couple of special walleye spinner rigs. Nada, zip, zilch. Not even a whitie bitey for the first two hours. Everything was shivvering.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Finally moved out deeper and found some fish on sonar in the 9 to 10 foot depths...over and near rocks. Some were white bass and volunteered to join me in my tube. Better than nothing but not what I was after. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I finally hooked up on a nice 20 inch plus wallie out in almost 11 feet of water. Hit a big purple and chartreuse plastic. Inexperienced fish. Didn't know how to hang on and accidently let go just as I was bringing it close to the net.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]No more walleye suspects so I downsized and went to a tandem tube jig rig to play with the whities. Wouldn't ya know it. That's when I brought in a chubby 16" walleye. The only one for the day.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The water was warming a couple of degrees by noon so I decided to drag some bait to see if I could get either a walleye or kitty on a minnow while continuing to pitch plastic. Alternated with chub minnows and small white bass as bait. Didn't catch a single catfish. No married ones either. Didn't even get any inquiries. None of the usual spots gave up any love.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As I was heading toward the ramp I kept pitching the plastics along the shoreline of the channel. Got a few light bites. No hookups. But as I got close to the ramp I glanced at the temp guage and noticed it was almost 63 degrees at the end of the channel. That was several degrees warmer than outside. And the water was a fairly clean green. AHA![/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have caught lots of fishies out of Utah Lake in the past by finishing up casting onto the ramp. For some reason it attracts bitsy fishies and they attract bigger fishies. Today was no exception. I cast into about two feet of water just out from the ramp and a couple of fry jumped from the water in fright. Shortly afterward I got a smack and set the hook into a feisty whitey. The next cast resulted in a double. And the next twenty or thirty casts were usually not completed before some silly fish impaled itself upon my jig hooks.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Up until that point I had not kept any white bass. I tossed them all back without even taking pictures. But the unique experience of catching them off the ramp warranted a few pics...and I kept a few to join the lonely wallie in my basket. TubeBabe and I like a bit of fresh scampi fillets once in a while.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I had as many as I wanted and needed to stop at Cabelas on the way home to pick up an order so I got out of my Renegade. But, out of curiosity, I made a cast back out toward where I had been parked and casting. Whango, bango. Still game on. Those silly fish weren't going anywhere. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]About that time a guy pulled up in a truck and was whoopin' and hollerin' as I cranked in several more fish. He made a comment about my tricked out craft and I agreed it was "decorated"...and allowed that I was sure glad I had it so I could get out to all those fish.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]He had a good attitude and asked the magic question...would I mind if he joined me. Shoot no. I even fixed him up with a couple of super jigs and showed him where to put them. He landed several nice whities in quick succession and was still workin' them over pretty good as I drove off.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Thanks. The Renegade is really much larger and all that stuff. But, after a couple of serious trips I am thinking that I might still prefer fishing from my tube for most of the fishing I do.[/#0000ff]

sometimes bigger is not always better.

However in my case our "little" 12' boat would be nice if it were bigger. I am enjoying the gas motor and being able to get around to areas I would be able to get to just with the electric trolling motor.
