Redfish and bonefish await anglers for famed Florida Keys catch & release event

ISLAMORADA, In-the-Florida Keys - It's not just who can catch-and-release the most redfish and bonefish, aka Redbones, it's the major strides to catch a cure for CF that's made the trilogy series one of the most rewarding and fun fishing competitions throughout the Florida Keys.

The 24th Redbone Celebrity Fishing in Islamorada takes place in Islamorada this weekend Nov. 4th - 6th. The Keys trilogy finale follows the 22nd SLAM in Key West in Sept., for tarpon, permit and bonefish, and 21st Baybone at Key Largo in Oct., for bonefish and permit.

At the Redbone anglers score multiple points by catching both species which are all measured, photographed and quickly released alive at the boat. Original artwork by nationally known marine artists are awarded to the top anglers and teams in general, spin and fly division, and the largest and most fish caught and released in each target species.

Still openings for anglers at two-day Redbone and one-day Superfly

"Participant and team entries with great captains to guide them are still available," said Capt. Gary Ellis. "A two-angler team entry is $3,500 which includes the guide fees for two days of fishing, all social functions such as the kick-off party with live and silent auctions, continental breakfasts, box lunches, dockside parties with hors d'oeuvres, Sunday awards dinner and a tournament bag. Anglers who would like to fish with a celebrity the individual entry fee is $3,000.

The two day event is preceded on Friday by the Superfly, a unique one-day, one-fly tournament sponsored by The Fly Shop of Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. The Superfly registration and dinner are at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3rd at The Islander Resort. Fishing is Friday, Nov. 4th, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Its awards ceremony is held during the Redbone kick-off dinner.

"The Islander Resort is our host hotel in Islamorada and our dockside host is the Lorelei Cabana Bar and Marina," said Susan Ellis who co-founded the Redbone with her husband.

Not fishing?? Come on out, meet the celebs, check out the boutique, raffles and more

The Redbone is famous for its dockside parties at the Lorelei at MM 82 where the public can meet celebrity anglers like NFL stars Jim "Crash" Jensen and Mark Cooper, astronaut Bruce Melnick, author Bob Rich Jr. and others from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

There's also the Redbone boutique famous for "end of the year deals" on tournament wearables, colorful Tim Borski shirts, fishing rods and numerous gift items.

In addition there are three on-going Redbone raffles for CF research funding. One is for a fully rigged 16' Dragonfly boat, motor & trailer; another for a Ford Focus by South Florida Fords and a third for a nine-day fishing trip for four to the Crocodile Bay Resort in Costa Rica.

Redbone background and the major strides by researchers to find a cure

The Redbone tournament was founded in 1988 by the Ellis' as a grassroots effort to help victims like their daughter Nicole who have CF. With help from baseball legend Ted Williams it raised $16,000 that first year and has since spawned nearly 30 fishing events across the U.S. and internationally raising over $15 million for scientists and researchers at the CF Foundation.

The events gained fame on TV as hundreds of top celebrities have competed including General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Hall of Famers John Havlicek (NBA), Wade Boggs (MLB), Ted Hendricks (NFL), super model Lauren Hutton, pro baseball's Tim Wakefield and Davey Johnson the late saxophonist Clarence Clemons and the late sportscaster Curt Gowdy.

"While these celebs have all helped bring awareness to CF over these two dozen years, medical scientists have made amazing advancements especially with gene research," said Ellis. "Not only did doctors isolate the CF gene, it in turn paved the way for the discovery of the genes for sickle cell anemia, Huntington's disease and many others. It's remarkable how far they've come, but there's still no cure and our tournaments continue in full force."

Besides The Islander the other major sponsors in The Redbone Trilogy includes Rich Products, Robert James Sales, Redbone Rods, Sea Safe Suncare, Image Graphics, Double Tree Grand Key Resort, Dove Creek Lodge and DragonFly Boatworks.
