Changing Lure's hook??
#1
Hi,
I need some advise on changing of Lure's hook. Does changing the original hooks' on the Lures to a heavier/bigger hook affect the performance of the lure???

Reason is that using the original treble hook on Rapalas ( Magnum CD 18 ) is not strong enough when it comes to fighting the GTs. The original treble hook tends to give way when a big GT is encountered. So I was thinking of changing the treble hook to an Owner 4X 5/0 treble. Does it affect the performance of the lure???

Would appreciate any advise given!!

Thks,
Pete.

Changing one treble hook for another of the same size, but stronger will not affect the lure's action.

I have changed all of my salt water jigs to single hooks. This changes things, since the treble hook acts like a little sea anchor and aids in the kick of the jig.

i DISLIKE THE WAY TREBLE HOOKS TEAR UP THE MOUTHS OF SMALL FISH I WANT TO SAFELY RELEASE.

Putting single hooks on Rapallas work. Just like the single hooks on Marrauder/Bonita type lures for Wahoo. Single hooks give better penetration of the hooks on larger fish. You miss some of the hits however. Put a swivel between the hook and the lure.

Treble hooks are a must for Stripers however. Stripers bash their baits like Thresher Sharks and will repeatedly stay unhooked with single hooks on your jigs. I put trebles back on my freshwater jigs.

Here in over-populated and overfished California. I catch a Striper or Trout and IT IS coming home for dinner! It ain't gonna be released.

Hi Thor & Ace,

Thks for your replies and advises. I do understand the need to change the Treble hooks to a similar size but stronger. But what do happens if you change it to a bigger treble hook?? I ask this as I bought quite a huge lot of 5/0 4X treble hooks and the original Rapala's treble hooks looks like only a 3/0 size. I would like to use the 5/0 size if possible as I don't want to spend more if possible. Would appreciate if you could tell me whether the 5/0 size is usable otherwise would have to
buy the 3/0 size. Will also try to use the single hook if need to.

Thks.

Rgds,
Pete.

there is indeed a difference in the weight of hooks, slight differences are to be expected.

I change hooks on my lures every year, to make up for any problems is just a matter of changing your action slightly. (faster or slower and not by much)

I've changed the hooks on several of my casting plugs and jigs because of the size of the GT, amberjackand tuna I hook up with. I use a stainless steel (made from one single wire) double hook. I don't know who makes em' but there's all sizes available here in Hawaii. The part that I really like is that you don't need to put a split ring or any other attaching device between the lure and the hook. That keeps the hook closer to the lure. Most of the plugs and jigs you buy have the hook attached right to the rings of the lure. Just cut off the old hook and slide on the double. The bigger double hook size will be about the same weight as the original trebble.

Capt. Jeff

I agree Jeff.

Using double hooks creates less damage without a majpr loss in hook ups. They also negate the need to slit rings as well.

Some people call these hooks "double tuna's" and they are made by several different companies including Maruto. These stainless doubles are also slightly shorter than many of the tinned equivalents that are on the market and are also cone cut razor sharp.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Mod-Lures/Baits & Oz Boards
http://www.demonjigs.com

Yep they look like Maruto's to me Jeff given the bent hook tips on them.

We use a similar set up on our R-C Baitfish Lures below for those that want them:

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Mod-Lures/Baits & Oz Boards
http://www.demonjigs.com
