Media Invited to Participate in Walleye Egg Collection, View Collection Process

Cortland, OH - Natural walleye reproduction in many Ohio lakes is not consistent enough to produce good year classes of fish annually and saugeye do not reproduce naturally in Ohio reservoirs. These are two very popular sport fish sought after by thousands of Buckeye State anglers every year, so the Ohio Division of Wildlife's goal is to continue to provide ample, good quality sport fishing opportunities to Ohioans through projects described below.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW), District Three office (Akron) has been tasked with taking 270 quarts of walleye eggs from the Mosquito Creek Reservoir population. This represents about half of the total amount needed for our statewide production of walleye/saugeye.

This work is critical to Ohio anglers since we are creating walleye/saugeye fisheries across the state for anglers to enjoy. Without this work, there would not be any of these fisheries due to the natural reproduction limitations.

Up to 16 trap nets will be set on Mosquito Reservoir in an effort to collect male and female walleye. Fish will be brought back to the State Park ramp on the south side so that the hatcheries can process the fish.

Fish will then be hatched out at the state fish hatcheries, and either introduced as fry (in April) or fingerlings (in May) across dozens of lakes in Ohio.
