Can't Catch Anything...
#1
Hey everyone. I need some major help fishing; if anyone with some experience and patience could give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

When I was little I would occasionally fish with my great aunt. About 8 months ago I decided to pick up fishing again, however my great aunt passed away years ago, and I don't know anyone else who fishes, so I really have no idea what I'm doing.

I've probably gone fishing ~20 since. I've caught a total of probably about five fish, and they've all only been a few inches long.

I'm from central NJ; I've fished the south branch of the Raritan River, which is supposed to be stocked with trout. I've also fished Round Valley, which is supposed to have a huge variety of fish. Finally, I've fished Carnegie Lake by Princeton for bass.

I adjust my hooks and lures based on what kind of fish I'm going for, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I've also tried virtually every kind of bait imaginable.

I don't have a boat, which probably doesn't help, but I still feel I should be catching something.

If anyone has any advice or ideas on what I might be doing wrong, please let me know. I'm getting pretty frustrated, and I'm not sure I'm going to stick with it much longer if my luck doesn't change.

Welcome to the site DTE26, I really don't know the area you are fishing but fishing is the same no matter where your at. Have you tried fishing with a worm under a bobber? Have you tried bottom fishing? If not, just tie on a hook with a small weight around 1/4 oz. bait the hook with a worm or a bait fish and cast to a spot that doesn't look too weedy. You can also go to any local bait shop and ask them if they can give you any tips on local spots that are doing good and what you will need to use to catch the fish there. How close are you to the ocean? If you are that is another place to try.

HelloDTE26, hope you catch something soon and hope you like lures, try something smaller for a lure like a rapala 2 1/2", just use light line 10-12lb or less this way you can cast far.
Sometimes we have to finess the fish and small lures should do the trick. The rapala catches every type of gamefish so it doesn't matter where in the world you live,[#bf6000]says it right on the box![/#bf6000]
catches all game species..
Try the 2 1/2" rebel minnow,it has a rattle which will give you that extra edge and help you fish with confidance
The jointed rapala gives off good vibrations[Smile]
also a good lure.
Paulpro tip:if you remove or grind off the lip of any of these lures it will become strictly topwater, great for those shallow areas
[#bf6000]These lures never fail: [/#bf6000][#000000]I'd go with a few rebel lures, start small like this one, plus its cheaper[Wink][/#000000]
