Panama Fishing Report- July 24th, 2012

Fishing this week with Come Fish Panama was avid angler Trina Clark, born and raised in Balboa, Panama. Being a native of Panama, Trina had the fortunate opportunity to fish and dive the Atlantic as well as the Pacific Oceans, which in Panama, can be as little as 50 miles apart. However, fishing the Gulf of Chiriquí would be a first for her, so we were honored to offer her this new experience.
Conditions
The morning conditions were just right for the ride offshore to Isla Montuosa, once we finished catching our Blue Runners for our day’s live-bait fishing. Water temperature was a bit on the cool side, with light and variable winds at 2-3 knots and smooth seas. But that would change drastically around 11am when strong prevailing winds from the NE and black-layered clouds were threatening to close us out.
The Tuna Run
We ran past the Triangle and arrived at Isla Montuosa in search of Yellowfin Tuna. But today was not be our lucky Tuna day. Typically this area holds hundreds of Dolphin following the huge schools of bait and Tuna, but today you could count the Dolphin with 2 hands and have a couple of fingers left over. Perhaps they were looking for a meal as we were. We decided to pick up and hit a Honey Hole for the hard hitting and rod bending Pacific Amberjacks for the time being. Trina wasted no time getting into the action. After having her rod bent over and over, she finally understood why fishing off the Gulf of Chiriquí was something special in Panama. After boating 3 of these "Reef Donkeys", the rest became catch and release for a future angler to enjoy.
Black Clouds and Thunder- Snapper Delight
After enjoying a couple of hours on the AJs, the weather, closed in on us. We quickly started putting things away and prepared for a rough ride back. Over the radio we heard two other boats trying to make it out to our location, but quickly decided to call it a day and head back to home port. Our mission now was to dodge the worst area even if we had to go out of our way a few miles to get around the storm. This scenario worked for us as we detoured in and around showers to finally make it over to Isla Ladrones. Once on the bottom structure on the Southwest end of the island, we let out our baits and almost instantly, fish on! The Mullet Snappers were waiting for us and ready to feed. Trina was ready to tackle these strong fighters, boating several and releasing many to fight another day.
A trip around the Islands with Thanks
It was now time to call it a day and head back to the lodge. With nice 2 foot swells and the wind in our favor, this day ended on a high note. The Yellowfin eluded us on this day of rain, but in the end, it was another great day of bottom fishing. We would like to thank Trina for giving us an opportunity to take her offshore, and look for her return to the Gulf of Chiriquí to hook up with other species during our peak season, which is December through April.
