Bob Krumm, who guides on the BighHorn River tailwaters in southern Montana, sends us this report of fishing conditions there in early September:
"This year the flow has been reduced to 1750 cfs-a big difference from last year's high water. Though the flow is reduced the fishing has been fantastic. Dry fly fishing has benefitted from a long drawn out hatch of blue-winged olives followed by black caddis and tan caddis. Nymph fishing on the Bighorn is always good.
The small stream fishing in northern Wyoming and southern Montana has suffered due to warm water temperatures and reduced flows. I hazard a guess that the trout have retreated in many of the plains streams to within three or four miles of the canyons."
Krumm says there are some 7000 trout per mile in the Bighorn, and that the tailwater fish can sometimes be fat as footballs. He said most anglers get one of 20 inches or better in a day's guided fishing--visit www.bluequillflycompany.com for details.
