Fishing reports
#1
Cold fronts continue to roll through the lakes area about every two or three days but at least the water temperatures have dropped into the mid 60's and have stayed there for three days now. Hopefully this drop in the water temperatures will turn the fish on. Over the past week the fishing has been slow except for Catfish which are being taken in numbers.

The Largemouth Bass are being taken in the bays on humps and ledges as well as on secondary points and on the flats near wood cover. The deeper fish are being taken on Carolina rigged tubes and small creature baits. The shallower fish are being taken on top water lures, spinnerbaits, medium running crankbaits, lipless crankbaits, and Texas rigged tubes fished near wood cover. Some few reports of schooling fish have been received but still not as many as one would expect for this time of year.

The Smallmouth Bass are being taken on main lake points and the first secondary points in the bays on crankbaits, suspending jerkbaits, Carolina and Texas rigged tubes and small creature baits. Some early morning and late evening topwater is being reported on the Smallmouth near secondary rocky points and some near wood cover in shallow water.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are: Lucky Craft Sammy in shad patterns, ChatterBuzz buzzbaits in white, Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer and blueglimmer/chartruese, Lucky Craft pointer in american shad, Hook Some Bass tubes in amber/red and green pumpkin/brown, Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer, Lee Sisson crankbaits in grey ghost, Hook Some bass baby brush hounds in watermelon/red, and Snoozer tubes in road kill cammo and watermelon burst.

The Crappie are being taken in 7-12 ft of water over wood cover in the bays and on the main lake creek channel ledges. These fish are being taken on vertically fished minnow/jig combinations and minnows under bobbers.

The Catfish are very active with good catches of Channels and Blues being reported. These fish are being taken near the river channels by bottom fishing with cut shad and leeches.

A good number of crappie are being caught. The best fishing still seems to be in the Gwinn Island area. Most are coming from around 15' and are tight to cover. Both jigs and minnows are working well. Some reports of fish weighed in at two pounds.

Black bass are fair in the morning and evenings on top-water baits. Rapalas seem to be doing well; buzz baits are bringing up a few fish as well. During the day, plugs that run about 14' are catching bass also. There seems to be a lot of activity on the steep sides of points. Bass are still chasing shad and a few are being caught in schooling jumps.

Hybrids and whites are a little slow, with some being taken by casting or trolling rooster tails. There are still some morning and evening jumps, but these are scattered. I've had most success during the day by casting rooster tails in about 35' to 45'. Most fish are small, with none going over four pounds. There is still the occasional 6+' being caught, but not in great numbers. When the water cools, the bites should really pick up.

Cumberland river

browntrout080703.jpg browntrout080703.jpg Cumberland River--Water Temp--62 degrees--Higher than normal water levels due to longer generation level continue. Browns are VERY ACTIVE, hitting Rapala's ,Yo-Zuri,s and Blue Fox spinners. Large shad streamers on sinking tip lines have been the best for larger browns. Craw imitation crank baits have good for both browns and rainbows. Spoons (Castmasters and Little Cleo,s ) worked deep for some of larger rainbows. Stripers are active on live bait and casting large minnow style baits . Walleye bite has slowed down ,a few still being caught trolling crankbaits SLOWLY upstream

These are the reports I could get from friends and familey. Is you need another body of water let me know I am sure I can get it.
