Winter panfish on the fly help!
#1
Ive fly fished for trout all year round and now most of my favorite lakes and rivers are frozen over. ive always wanted to try fly fishing for panfish in the winter. ive done quite well in the summer with simple ant patterns on local ponds and now i want to try it in the winter. what patterns have worked for ya'll? particularly here in the southwest like central New Mexico. and any of them a beginner fly tier make himself?

If it were me Id stay with the ants and small terrestrial patterns like beetles or poppers for surface fishing probably on warmer days and go with small wooly buggers or wooly worms and beadhead hares ear nymphs.. but that is here in SOCAL.. but still might work for you.. all are easy ties or your local fly shop will have them and may have some good suggestions for waters in their area..
