Florida FWCC Meets in Orlando Feb. 13-14 to Discuss Marine Fishery Issues
#1
Issue: COMMISSION MEETING

Action: Marine fisheries issues to be discussed Feb. 13

Information: Several marine fisheries management items will be discussed at the Feb. 13-14 FWC Commission meeting in Orlando.

Marine fisheries issues to be discussed include updates from the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council meetings and the following:

The Commission will consider, in a final public hearing, setting the Gulf of Mexico gag grouper season in state waters. The proposed season for most of the state would start July 1 and end when the Gulf federal season ends. This July 1 season does not include state waters off Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties, which, according to the proposal, would open April 1 through June 30 instead.

The Commission also will consider in a final rule creating game fish and sport fish definitions that could later be applied to some of Florida's fisheries.

They also will consider in a final rule establishing a recreational bag limit and a closed season for gray triggerfish in Gulf of Mexico state waters. These changes would make state regulations for gray triggerfish in Gulf of Mexico waters consistent with pending federal regulations.

In a draft rule hearing, the Commission will discuss changes to the bluefish rule including updating several outdated provisions, clarifying that the size limit and recreational bag limit extend into federal waters and reformatting the rule to conform to the new style developed under the rule cleanup process.

In a draft rule hearing, the Commission will discuss proposed language changes and reorganization to the marine fisheries rules in Florida Administrative Code 68B as well as the addition of a new general chapter.

The Commission will also, on the consent agenda, consider approving the 2013 saltwater license free fishing days.
