Repainting Jigs
#1
I was watching the old lady paint her nails today and got a great idea. Some of my oldest jigs are nearly colorless after hitting rocks for so long, and I don't have a powder coating system. So I picked up her polishes and started getting to work on my jigs. I successfully repainted all of my jigs and colored some plain lead jig heads. The possibilities are endless with this approach. Thought I'd share since some of you are also doing some spring cleaning on the lmb gear

[cool][#0000ff]A lot of guys think they have solved all their jig painting problems when they discover nail polish. And it will work...briefly. However makes a very thin and weak coat. It pops off easier than powder coatings. Plus, it is not resistant to the solvents in plastics. If you let your nail polished jig heads touch a plastic tube or grub it will dissolve the paint and make a mess.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have a semi-commercial lure making operation and have over 40 different jig molds. I pour and paint thousands of jigs each year. I use only vinyl jig paints because of the colors I can get...and they hold up for many uses...even in wood and rocks. I finish them all with a clear 2-part epoxy that is resistant to solvents.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]But if you only want to touch up a few lures, and you have the nail polish in the colors you want, then it is a good cheap quick fix.[/#0000ff]

Your local model airplane -er- hobby shop will have small bottles of a huge variety of colors that work good. Not as durable as powder coating though & finishing them with a 2 part epoxy keeps them from getting all smudged up by the plastics.

Great advice! I wouldn't have thought of the solvents in the plastics until they started to melt as I fished them haha how much did you pay for your equipment? I've always wanted to have a little shop together to work on jogs and make my own lures

Thank you for this, I never thought of using model airplane paints until you mentioned this - i don't have the money to drop on a whole powder system hahah so airplane paint will work like a dream

I never did it with jig heads, but I have used nail polish to paint up my drop shot weights. I just painted them, let em dry, and then dipped them in one of the lady's clear-coat finishers.

I found that bass will actually hit a painted drop shot weight. Now I just use em plain. Seems the fish don't pay as much attention.

I have had success dipping the weights in a clear-coat, and then sprinkling sand on them. Pretty good camo if you use the right kind of sand.

They were always really durable. I never had one chip on me.

I just repainted my drop shots as well - I have an army of dipsy sinkers that I started using for my drop shots after losing so many and spending so much (not to mention the wire popping off of some) - I just tie a real wimpy clinch knot and it seems to do the same job. The sand idea GENIUS! I'll have to try that out

[#0000ff]Here are a couple of PDF file writeups I have put together. I help a lot of other guys get into lure making and this helps give you an idea of what it takes to put a small workshop together.[/#0000ff]

I gotta throw in this comment. You can take what ol' TubeDude tells ya to the bank. I've fished with him and he knows what he's talking about. Also, the stuff he makes WORKS!!
