Looking for a Good Merc Outboard Rebuild Mechanic
#1
I have a 1992 Mercury 150 Black Max, 2.5L XR6. Yesterday on the lake, the motor locked up on my way back to the marina. Upon inspection, the oil injection line broke. Cylinder number 5 has only 20 psi of compression. The rest seem ok (number 2 is a little low but not much). Anyways, I need to see about having this rebuilt. I can do a lot but would like someone who is more knowledgable to head the rebuild. I'm thinking I should be able to get away with a re-ring and hone. I live up in Layton and I'm wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction? I would expect a dealer would probably charge more than it's worth.?

Update. I just puled the offending cylinders head off in hopes that it was just a gasket. No luck. The pistons all look good. The one cylinder has come buildup on it so I'm assuming rings and a hone as a minimum. It's bored .015 so the cylinders are already sleeved in case it needs to go more but I doubt it.

I'm not really familiar with splitting these blocks so I'm hoping to find someone with a little knowledge locally.

I'm hoping I can pull the pistons and hone, re-ring all while leaving the powerhead. I don't have any way to pull it, or anywhere to put it if I did...

There are a couple of guys on the site that might be able to help you but you would have to ask them, if they want to tackle a job that big or if they have the time, The first guy is Geezer, he has done work for me and another guy on BFT but I'm not sure he wants to do a job that big. The second guy is Mercuryman, he does that kind of work for a living but I'm not sure he has the time. I'll post a link to their profiles in a few minutes.
