Stop by Our Office for up to Date Fishing Report.
Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
Bisbee Black and Blue 2013 Results
Tournament results information taken from Pisces Sportfishing Blog.
Joy was evident in the voice of Captain Kevin “Cubby” Pahl captain of the 60 ft. Hatteras II Success, when we reached him by phone the day after his team had landed the winning 774 LB fish, in the Bisbee Black & Blue Tournament – the second largest qualifier in the competition’s 33 year history.
As tends to happen in the world’s richest billfish tournament, everybody was kept guessing right up until the end, especially as Martha McNab, a well know local woman angler looked set to be a shoo in to be the first ever female to win the Super Bowl of fishing, with her 525 LB blue marlin caught on day two of the three day event. That milestone was to be reached, but surprisingly not by Martha, but by Linda Williams from Rancho Cucamonga, California.
Captain Cubby told us that he had fished the Pacific the two previous days as everybody knew that several big blues from the charter fleet had been caught there as well as the fish landed by Martha aboard Retriever; he fished all the well- known spots and came up blank. On the last day of the tournament he thought “the clock is ticking and at least a hundred boats are turning right to the Pacific, I am going to go the other way, up to Destiladeras, the water looks good and there is no traffic”. Team Success worked the area trolling their lures without action so Cubby systematically worked his way to the outer Gordo as the clock ticked on and with only thirty five minutes left to go in the tournament, the water behind the boat exploded as a massive marlin charged the Petrolero lure with its mouth wide open. “Everybody saw it bite” said Cubby, “my team were all in their positions and we were all watching the lures; I drive the boat standing backwards so I can see them. We could see that the fish was over 500 lbs. and it jumped at least six times, which is a lot for a fish of that size. We had the fish to the wire in an hour, but it was still strong and headed away from us, so we decided to let it go more time. After about another hour we had it in the corner and threw all the metal (gaffs) we had into it; we didn’t want to take any chances. The team did their job perfectly and the hardest thing was getting it into the boat, no easy feat with an almost 800 LB fish”.

Cubby praised his crew consisting of his Mexican deckhand Antonio “Pelon” Zuniga, his brother Craig Pahl who was aboard as an angler along with Dave Reid, who is a captain on another boat, Jan Howard and of course owner of II Success, Linda Williams. Cubby stated “Linda loves to fish and this could not have happened to a nicer or more generous person. The guys on the dock respect Linda for her fishing skills. This is a dream come true for her, she was thrilled just to participate, definitely something on her bucket list.” Linda’s husband John, who owns a house framing company, had urged her to fly down to fish the tournament, which she did bringing along friend Jan Howard. He was totally shocked to get a phone call to say they had won and flew into Cabo Saturday to be present for the awards ceremony.
Captain Kevin “Cubby” Pahl is well known and liked around Cabo; the 51 year old is originally from Carlsbad, California and grew up fishing out of Oceanside. He has been a professional skipper in Cabo for the past 29 years and this win is the highlight of his fishing career and his largest fish to date. This day almost didn’t happen though, as last year he underwent his second hip replacement surgery, during which he contracted a severe infection, followed by an adverse reaction to the drugs given him, which put him in the critical care unit for six days. There was a moment when he thought it was a possibility that he would never fish again, making this victory even sweeter.

3rd Place release 3 blues Reel Pain II $12,218.00
Release is decided on who caught first when places are tied like this.

Massive 774 LBS blue marlin gives surprise late hour victory for lady angler Linda Williams aboard Success in Bisbee Black & Blue. This will take 1st place but won't necessarily pay most money because of the optional categories they were or were not entered in.
Martha McNabb was thrilled last night after landing the biggest fish so far in the 2013 Bisbee Black & Blue; even though she is not entered across the board, it appears that her fish caught yesterday, weighing 525 LBS will net her a big pay day. Who knows, if no larger fish are caught today, the last day of the competition, the fish will be worth even more. Martha is a die hard fisherwoman and should she win will be the first female ever to win the Bisbee. Martha is no stranger to success though, this five foot two powerhouse landed a 635 lb blue marlin several years ago in the Bisbee, but was bumped to second place by a boat that caught two fish in the 300 -350 lb plus range, that when added together beat the weight of her fish. Martha loves fishing in Cabo aboard her 61 ft Viking "Retriever" with her crew of local Mexican guys. GIRL POWER, in what is mostly a macho world.
WATER: The water has been really nice and blue as of lately with water temperatures in the lower 80,s to high 70,s. With the calm weather and sunny days we expect the water to stay nice with swells 1 to 3 feet on the Sea of Cortez side and 2 to 4 feet on the pacific side.
WEATHER: The weather has been great really with lots of sun and light breezes. Really one of the best times of year to be in Cabo as it is starting to cool down at night and the day time highs are in the mid to upper 80,s and lows dropping down to low 70,s to ladder 60,s.
BILLFISHING: Well the Marlin fishing is good and as you can see there has been some good size fish caught over this past week. I am not a big fan of the fishing tournaments and I know it brings in lots of revenue to the local economy but it sure isn’t good for the Marlin by no means. There was some big fish caught this year and I am really happy for some of my friends who did very well in the tournament by catching a 778 pound Marlin but are we really doing and thinking since these fish take years and years to get to that size and when we take one and kill it its similar to chopping down the Redwood forest. When these fish are gone there gone they will never be another one like it and they don’t grow back that fast. I am starting to wonder if our oceans can sustain this sort of thing. I am not sure the oceans can keep up with what is being taken from them and I am wondering what is going to be left for my kids and theres. Well enough of this rambling I think each and everyone of us has to make our own decisions on preserving our oceans and future.
Lots of Blue Marlin being caught this past week from Gordo Banks all the way to the Golden Gate and it seems the fish are taking lures, live bait and even some rigged Ballyhoo. Good numbers of Striped Marlin taken off the Arch 2 to 5 miles and all the way up to San Jamie Banks and were taken on lures and pitching live bait.
BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollars a piece and there has been plenty around:
DORADO: Still lots od Dorado around mostly inshore but there really all over the place. You can run into them about anywhere now from the Gordo Banks to up around Saint Jamie on the pacific side. Most are being caught with lures, Ballyhoo and cut bait. If you want Dorado now you shouldn’t be disappointed.
TUNA: Some Tuna reports 18 miles off of the Light House mingling with the Porpoise. There has been a few caught using cedar plugs and striker kings in the 200lbs range. Then there is the typical football size Tuna closer to shore but there have been some Tuna around the fishing area but if you really want a big Tuna you will have to run out a few miles to land anything of any size.
INSHORE: The best inshore fishing has been really plenty of Dorado and some striped Marlin from Gray Rock to the Pump House. There has also been some Roosterfish reported but mostly smaller Dorado. The Pangas are the ones scoring pretty good numbers of fish so you might consider renting a Panga if you want to get in on the inshore action. In general it has been really good.
WAHOO: The Wahoo bite has slowed down some since last week not near the number of Wahoo this week. Rapalas and Maraders lures were catching the fish this week at about a quarter mile off of Solmar all the way up to Los Arcos.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. They don’t even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report. Until next time good fishing and we hope to see you in Cabo soon. Come by the office here in Cabo and get all the latest up to date fishing report.
