Need to buy new rod any suggestions
#1
Hello at my last fishing adventure one of the leader rings for the line broke of It was a Shakespeare ugly stick a had used this rod 3 times so imagine my disappointment on it breaking so easily.
I fish mostly in lakes, like to fish for trout cat fish, kokanee, I live in Utah.
I saved the reel so just need a new rod and would like a good back up rod.

Go with a good graphite rod. You will be amazed by the strength and feel of it.

Go to Sportsmans Warehouse. Large selection of fishing rods for you to check out. FYI, unless it says otherwise, most rods today are graphite.
Take your reel and match it to that rod type. Spinning, casting, etc.

True it shouldn't have broken. In the future look at shimano products as their rods are warrantied for life. Their reels have withstood years of use by me and still smooth to operate. Sounds like a med. action 7ft rod will work well for you.

I guess it depends on how long ago to bought the rod but Ugly stick warrants its rods for 5 to 7 years, see link below:

I'm not sure what Sportsmans will do for you but when you go in there, make sure you tell them you only used it three times. The bad thing is, most of the times they want to see a receit and a lot of us never keep receits, hopefully you did.

Good deal, at least it did not cost you anything extra. They have been stocking all the Comunity ponds, one last time before winter, so nows the time to get out there and catch a few before it gets really cold[Wink]. Good luck.

I've never heard of anyone fishing at Ogden Bay, what kind of fish do they have there? Yea, Quail creek has bass too but it also has crappie and trout. Good luck, where ever you end up.

I've actually had nothing but good success with an Ugly Stik, in fact, I regularly recommend them because of their superior rod strength and affordability.

I have encountered the issue with the eyelet popping out of the line guide, but this seems to be a more common occurrence with the older version of the rod, or the cheaper made versions mass produced for Walmart. With that said, I absolutely love the ugly stick lite series, and have not experience the eyelet issues with them. Even better are the inter coastal ugly sticks.

However, as previously mentioned, Shimano makes a fine rod, but be prepared to get your feelings hurt when it's time to check out. You are going to pay for the warranty, and unless you are using specialized tactics specific to salt water, I would argue the price versus the value add. I use Shimano products for saltwater applications, specific their jigging rods, but for my normal heavy fresh water applications (catfishing) I use ugly stik Tiger jigging rods. I use traditional ugly stiks for my light weight stuff.

Fishermen will find a variety of fish including bullhead, carp and channel catfish here. Whether you’re fly fishing, spinning or baitcasting your chances of getting a bite here are good. So grab your favorite fly fishing rod and reel, and head out to Ogden Bay.
