Life-jacket lending sites sought
#1
[font "Arial"][size 2]Feb. 20 is the deadline for locations to apply to become lending sites for the free Life Jacket Loaner Program funded by the BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety & Clean Water.

The program lends children's life jackets -- from readily accessible sites such as marinas, boat clubs and waterfront businesses -- to boaters who have a temporary need for a child-sized life jacket for the day or weekend.

There is no cost to become one of the more than 300 loaner sites. Funding for the lending kits -- 12 life jackets in three sizes for children up to 90 pounds, signs and sign-out sheets -- comes from BoatU.S. member donations.

"The new U.S. Coast Guard regulation that took effect this year, in combination with previous state laws, now means that all 50 states have some type of child life jacket law," said Ruth Wood, president of the BoatU.S. Foundation. "Our program not only saves lives but can prevent a ticket as well."
