Frankfort, KY. - A groundbreaking ceremony for a memorial to Kentucky's fallen conservation officers is set for 1 p.m. (Eastern time) June 7 in Frankfort.
The memorial will honor the six Kentucky conservation officers killed in the line of duty since 1918. Invited guests at Friday's ceremony include family members of the fallen officers.
Dr. Jon Gassett, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, will serve as keynote speaker. Other guests will include Law Enforcement Division Director Hank Patton and members of the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission. Members of the Law Enforcement Division's Honor Guard will also attend.
The memorial is being spearheaded by the Kentucky Conservation Officers' Association, which has raised most of the $140,000 needed for the memorial. A bronze statue of a saluting officer that will serve as a centerpiece for the memorial is now on display at the Salato Wildlife Education Center, located on the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife campus.
Friday's ceremony is being conducted in front of the Salato Center.
The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife campus is located west of Frankfort off U.S. 60, approximately 1- west of the U.S. 127 interchange. A large bronze statue of a deer on a stone pedestal marks the main entrance.
