CLEVELAND - A Coast Guard law enforcement team conducted a boarding of a boat with 12 people aboard, in the vicinity if Kelleys Island, Ohio, and issued a federal ticket to the operator for boating under the influence Saturday night.
At about 8:45 p.m., a law enforcement team from Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio, aboard a 33-foot special purpose craft-law enforcement, boarded a 29-foot Lyman and conducted six field sobriety tests at the pier, where the blood alcohol content of the boat operator was .112 percent.
The Coast Guard law enforcement team ended the voyage and escorted the boat to the Portside Marina on Kelleys Island.
Much like on the road, the legal BAC is .08 percent in most states. Federal ticket procedures were initiated by Coast Guard Sector Detroit for both the boat operator and one non-complient passenger after local authorities declined to take the boaters into custody.
Boating under the influence is just as dangerous as driving under the influence, and just as illegal. If boaters suspect someone is operating a vessel under the influence, they should call 911 or the Coast Guard.
