Big Tilapia and Gizzard Shad in the wash
#1
We were throwing the cast net for some Shad last Saturday (3-10-14) and got a surprise.

Found some big Tilapia up to 4.5 pounds. The three fish weighed in at 11.40

The Gizzard Shad were 18 to 20 inches.
The Shad cut up and showed signs they were ready to spawn.

Where in the wash are you netting them?

All the way in the back where the water flows in. We found them about 4ft deep.

The wash is changing weekly, as the water is dropping fast. Watch out for the sand bars.

Got another Tilapia on Saturday.

Striper fishing was slow.

Wow! I never thought Tilapia could grow that big at that high of altitude. Use to catch those out of the Gila River down in Yuma. I love those fish they are good to eat and very plentiful. Hope to catch them if I ever visit Mead. Sure wonder if those Gizzards will feed the hungry Stripers in mead. They need more food but Shad eat up the valuable plankton for other species.[:/]
