ANGEL LAKE

No report and if it snows this weekend, the road may be closed for the winter. [#ff0000]Road is offically Closed

CAVE LAKE

Stocked for the fall, lots of fish available, they hit on just about anything. Great place for a beginning fly fishermen and women to have success and practice their techniques. The state park campground is open year round though the nights get quite cold here.

COMMINS LAKE

According to Chris Crookshanks, November is the best time of year to fish Comins Lake. Power bait or night crawlers are the baits of choice. The fish are hungry and putting away groceries getting ready for the winter while most anglers turn their attention to hunting. November is traditionally one of the months with the least amount of angler pressure. Fish up to 5 and 6 lbs can be caught while the average fish is weighing between 2 and 3 lbs. Fly fisherman should plan on using larger patterns such as wooly bugger and leach patterns. Darker colors such as blacks, browns, bloods and olives work the best.

CRITTENDON RESERVOIR

Fishing is still good here even though deer hunters have hit it pretty hard. It was stocked recently so some smaller fish are being caught. But if you try your luck at the north end in front of the willows along the weed beds some trout up to 20 inches can be taken on a regular basis. Crittendon was stocked with 4,000 trout on October 15.

DORSEY RESERVOIR

Dorsey is over half full and was recently stocked with trout.

ILLIPAH

Illipah has been stocked and there have been a lot of good reports on nice holdover fish in the 12 to 15 inch range being caught. Water is a little low, but the fishing is much better now than it was during the summer.

MOUNTAIN STREAMS & LAKES

Nevada Department of Wildlife Lathrop Student Adam Wolfe stocks Lamoille Creek.
With weather moving in this weekend, hiking into the high country is not advised. Once snow is on the ground access becomes severely limited. Fishing in Lamoille Creek has been hit or miss, with plenty of six to eight inch brookies being taken one day and then anglers get skunked the next. Dark nymphs such as hare’s ears and pt nymphs do okay.

RUBY LAKE NWR

Bass fishing has shut down, though trout fishing in the collection ditch is fair to good with a nine-pound rainbow being taken by a ten year old earlier this week. The marsh was stocked with trout on October 29 and 30. Water levels throughout the marsh are low.

SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR

Water here is also low, but fishing has been good to excellent with limits of trout to 22 inches being taken by both shore and boating anglers. Most anglers are using rainbow power bait or worms, while fly fisherman are using blood colored leaches or dark colored wooly buggers. The bite doesn’t seem to hit until late morning so sleep in and bring a lunch. Bass fisherman is still having some luck, but with the low front moving in, bass fishing for the summer is probably over. More than 15,000 trout were stocked in South Fork in October.

They have been catching fish between the dam and the boat ramp or over by the spillway. Jonathon Dobbs using a piece of Kentucky Fried Chicken on August 1st at 2:00 am caught a 27 pound-13 ounce catfish. The secret appears to be to fish in the middle of the night and to use the Colonel’s regular breaded chicken with the secret spices. Bass fishing has been fair to good using plastic gear or crank baits and fishing the rocky shores and points for bass. One bass, 15 inches or longer may be kept.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR

While the reservoir is now less than 20% of capacity, the fishing is quite good with the cooler temperatures. Trout to 21 inches are being caught, primarily on worms and power bait. Fly fisherman are having good luck with wooly buggers in the darker colors. They are using both a medium sink tip and floating lines with weighted wooly buggers. Bead head patterns appear to have the advantage. The perch fishing is also very good and white or chartreuse jigs on 1/8 oz heads tipped with a piece of worm work well.

WILSON RESERVOIR

Shore fishermen continue to catch limits of fish here with most being caught earlier in the morning or late in the evening. Power bait and worms are still the favorite. For those anglers not familiar with Wilson, the road gets treacherous once it gets wet. You will need a 4-wheel drive. However, if the weather stays dry this is a great place to combine both a fishing and chukar-hunting trip. 14,000 trout were stocked in Wilson in October.
