Brent Graig from Tennessee, who has fished with me in the passed, made a return appearance with his father, Lloyd, and twin boys, Dillon and Camden, ages 13, by chartering the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Winds were out of the west at 9 mph, temperatures were in the low 80’s. On this adventure, Brent made a request to catch a large Shark. In the past, Brent caught Sailfish, Mahi Mahi and Kingfish with me.

Twenty minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 350 ft. of water off of the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale. We put out three Shark baits – surface, midrange and bottom – with two live Goggle Eyes from the kite. As we were discussing our previous fishing excursions and the fact that this was his father’s first time, the black shadow appeared on the short kite bait – Sailfish!!!! –he frantically chased the bait fish and captured it. The sun gleaming down on his diamond body was blinding as he exited the water. Lloyd jumped into the chair while the twins cheered Grandpa on. Twenty-five minutes later Mark, our mate, brought the 84” Sailfish into the boat for picture taking and was released.

From there I set up over one of my favorite wrecks. We set up the kite and the Shark surface bait, but as we were putting out the second Shark bait an explosion occurred on the surface bait. A Mako Shark grabbed the surface bait and jumped 5 ft. high out of the water showing his blue, purple and silver radiant colors – the fight was on as Brent hopped into the fighting chair to do battle, and the tug of water began. Mark got the flying gaff ready as Brent kept bringing the Shark closer and closer to the boat. Finally, Mark gaffed the Mako and pulled him through the transom door. WHAT A PRICED FISH!!!!!! From there Brent made a return appearance the following day to catch 14 Bonitos and a Hammerhead Shark measuring 103”, ending his adventurous fishing expeditions with the Happy Day Today for now.
