dc smallmouth

when do the smallmouth start biting plastics at deer creek? when should i start trying to catch them? do they spawn in the spring like largemouth, in the shallows? thanks

Bendo, good morning. My experience at DC with the smallies is generally around mid May, give or take a week or so, weather dependent of course. At that time of year, I have found them in shallow water and taking 3" tubes, carolina style. Watermelon is my fave, but sometimes some of the dark golden browns or smoke will work as well. Have also had decent success using small #5 rapalas in the shallows in May as well. Fished carolina style, this can be pretty effective in gold/black or rainbow. Good luck!
