Side Image Transducer,IN/OUTboard Question
#1
so got our new fish finder today from sportsmans, (humminbird 999hd si/di)
going to put it in tommorrow but after looking through the install instructions it has my worried, it says for the side imaging to work, NOTHING can be in the"view" of the transducer on either side, so i went out and looked at where our old is mounted and noticed that there isnt anywhere i can put it that the outboard of the engine is not in the way?

Send Reelfast a PM, he installed one on his boat and had some problems, he was able to work around it, to get it to work properly but he has an inboard engine with a jet drive. I'm sure you can also call Hummingbird customer service as well.

I don't use my side imaging that much. I was not sure if Mine would work but it works good
see if you can mount it some way without making holes in your boat
then you can see if it will work. the sigal goes down and to the side 180 deg.
here is a fourm

you can take pitchers of your boat and post them some one will help.
or do a search you may come up with somthing

i wonder if i could get away with attaching it to the top of the big engine so its down in the water and out of the way of the "view" while fishing, just wondering if when running the big engine if it would mess it up?

fist attempt at uploading a picture, hope it works...

well after spending all day searching onlie it looks like our only good option will be to buy a second transducer and a Y cable to run them as one so it can "see" out both sides

Although it was Reelfast's boat I saw a little about how he fixed his transducer and got it to work properly. You will need to move the transducer as far as you can to the center of the boat and still be able to steer the motor without hitting it. When you do this, you will be able to see about 70 to 80% of the whole picture of the side scanner. The rest will be blocked because you won't be able to get the transducer at the lowest point of your boat. You may decide to take it back and get a refund, if not I can tell you one more thing that will give you near 100% of the picture but might cost you more than it is worth.

i think we will be happy with everything else about this finder minus the side imaging if we can get it to work, but after all my reading im pretty sure the 2 transducers merged together should work

Ooops, I forgot to mention that your idea is the best solution, if you plan on keeping it. How much does the Y cable cost?

Hey I was talking with a guy that got a new hummin bird fish finder and needed a different transducer for his boat and they traded him straight across so if one of the trolling motor mounted types would work for you they might switch ya out. Good luck. J

seen a coule guys that said they did that also, but i think ill just go with the dual transducer setup. (with how our yamaha 8hp kicker is built i dont think one would work for us either)
the cable is like $25-30, figure we already dropped 1700+ whats another $250 to have it working correctly

You'll figure it out, they aren't too difficult. I just got one of the cheaper units and its great at least after they fixed the GPS bug. Have fun with it. J

My advice would be to install it and if needs be add the second transducer at a later date. I have my mounted as low as possible but my engine still hangs below it, I've never noticed a single issue. Then again I'm also running a Lowrance unit not the hummingbird.

Question?
Is that mounting plate wood or some other material, looks like a great Idea.
And why is the side scan transducer not mounted on the left side of the plate, this would lower it, reducing the blocking effect of the hull and Out-drive.
Did you mount the transducer or have it done, Looks very professional!!!

his looks to be mounted on what some call a "soap bar", its what alot of guys have been using to mount them incase they need to move stuff around theyre not putting a unch of holes in there boats

I thought about trying it, but we leave the boat up at the gorge all season so id rather just do it here and not have to worry about it.

but h3!!, maybe ill give it a try and see

Yep that's exactly what it is. Just a heavy piece of plastic used to save holes from getting punched in the back of your boat. I purchased it from Cabelas.

That picture was taken the day I installed the units. Since that time I've actually raised the side scan transducer and one of the other transducers about 1" just to avoid having them get hit by floating debris when motoring at full speed.
