California Salmon Production Meetings
#1
Computer Simulation Models Assist With Salmon Population Estimates and More

WHAT: The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is holding two open meetings in June where water operations and salmon production computer simulation models will be released to the public.

The first meeting addresses the San Joaquin River Basin-wide Water Operations and Temperature Model (HEC-5Q) which simulates reservoir storage, river flow and water temperature on a daily basis in the San Joaquin River and its tributaries, including the Merced, Tuolumne and Stanislaus Rivers. This model estimates hydropower generation from the main dams in the basin, including New Melones, New Don Pedro, New Exchequer and Friant. The model also includes estimation of electrical conductivity (EC) on a weekly time-step at various locations throughout the San Joaquin River Basin. Following the meeting, this model will be available for download at a web site provided during the meeting.

The second meeting will unveil the new web-based Salmon Simulator model, called SALSIM Version 2, for the fall-run Chinook salmon population in the San Joaquin River and its tributaries, the Merced, Tuolumne and Stanislaus rivers. This model covers the full life history cycle of fall-run Chinook salmon and includes river, Delta and ocean habitats, water temperature and predator abundance. This web-based version will be accessible at http://www.salsim.com after the meeting.

WHY: The models presented may be used by other state and federal agencies, local governments, water management agencies, environmental groups and researchers to assist with forecasting, reservoir management and understanding how environmental variables influence salmon production across diverse habitats.
