Ice Fishing for Walleye, Saugeye Flourishes at Ohios Grand Lake St. Marys
#1
CELINA, OH - The fish are actively biting at Grand Lake St.Marys in western Ohio, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

"We are pleased to see anglers enjoying success in the waters of Grand Lake St. Marys," said ODNR Director James Zehringer. "After a decade of stocking the lake, the fish are thriving and the populations continue to grow. We want to encourage everyone to enjoy the great fishing happening at Grand Lake St. Marys."

The fish, a mix of walleye and/or saugeye, have been stocked by the ODNR Division of Wildlife, which stocked walleye in Grand Lake St. Marys from 1999 until 2008. In 2009 and 2010, the ODNR Division of Wildlife stocked saugeye in the lake.

The fish at Grand Lake St. Marys are mostly being caught near the mouth of Coldwater Creek. This area was recently dredged, making it deeper, and food is plentiful, which also attracts fish to that area.

On Saturday, 40-50 people were ice fishing at Grand Lake St.Marys, and on Sunday, more than 75 people were catching fish on the lake, weighing an average of 3-4 pounds.

People interested in ice fishing on Grand Lake St. Marys are encouraged to be extremely careful on the ice with the impending warmer temperatures.

ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at www.ohiodnr.com.
