Northeastern Nevada Fishing Reports
#1
Northeastern Nevada
December 31, 2003

Recent snows and cold weather have changed the fishing conditions in eastern Nevada considerably. Ice is forming on most waters and in some cases such as Wild Horse Reservoir, is approaching 8 to 10 inches. However, on many of the other ice covered waters the ice is only an inch or two in thickness and caution is advised.

ANGEL LAKE

Road is closed for the winter.

CRITTENDON RESERVOIR

Ice is approximately 4 inches at last report, though may be a little thicker now. The ice thickness fluctuates so use extreme caution. No natural baits allowed here. Artificial flies, lures and jigs only.

MOUNTAIN STREAMS & LAKES

Nevada Department of Wildlife Lathrop Student Adam Wolfe stocks Lamoille Creek.

Access to the mountain lakes is shut down. There are avalanche warnings at the higher elevations.

RUBY LAKE NWR

The only open water is the spring hole ponds and the collection ditch. Artificial lures and flies only in the collection ditch. Fishing has been fair in the ditch, while the spring hole ponds are hit or miss. Ice in some areas is approaching 4 inches in thickness. Travel to Ruby Valley is hit or miss depending on the weather. Call ahead to check the status of the roads before venturing here. Ruby Lake NWR phone is 775-779-2237 and the phone number for NDOT is 1-877-NVROADS.

SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR

This is a tricky lake once it ices up. With it being at a lower elevation than Wild Horse and with a southwest exposure, the ice thickness fluctuates throughout the winter. There are also some pretty good currents that also contribute to the fluctuating ice thickness, so please take care if you go on the ice here. Right before ice-up, fishing was hot with fish up to 23 inches being caught with spinners from shore.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR

The water levels are extremely low and the lake is now ice covered. Some early ice anglers have reported fair to good success for both perch and trout. Perch are being caught near the island off of the state park boat ramp in about six to eight feet of water. Trout between 14 and 17 inches in length are being caught in the same area, though in shallower water. Worms and mealworms on some type of flashing device such as a spinner with a single hook, work the best for perch. Trout are being caught primarily with worms and power bait.

WILSON RESERVOIR

With the recent Christmas storm and with more wind and snow forecasted for New Years, travel to Wilson is not recommended. The last time the biologist for this water tried to make it to Wilson, he had to turn back.
