Public meeting on herring proposal Feb 10
#1
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) and the New
Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and
Wildlife will host a public meeting regarding the ASMFC's proposed
modifications to the Atlantic Herring Fishery Management Plan. The
hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10 at the
Division's Nacote Creek Research Station, Milepost 51, Route 9 in Port
Republic, Atlantic County.

Modifications will address the implementation of a limited access
program for the species to ensure healthy stocks as well as identify
maximum sustainable yield, management area boundaries and spawning
restrictions. Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and
Connecticut will also hold public meetings on these issues.

A copy of the proposed changes can be obtained by calling Fisheries
Management Plan Coordinator Megan Gamble at (202) 289-6400, or e-mailing
mgamble@asmfc.org, or via the Commission's website at www.asmfc.org
under Public Input. Written comments will be accepted until March 5,
2004 and should be forwarded to Ms. Gamble at 1444 Eye Street, NW, Sixth
Floor, Washington, DC 20005 or faxed to (202) 289-6051.
